Honda CR-V Oil Specifications: Complete Guide

The Honda CR-V uses specific oil grades depending on the engine and model year, and using the wrong spec can accelerate wear or trigger oil pressure warnings. Getting this right matters more than most owners realise, particularly with the 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder introduced in the fifth generation (2017 onwards).

What Causes Confusion

  • Multiple engine variants across generations: The 2.0L naturally aspirated (pre-2017) takes 0W-20, while the 1.5L turbo (2017+) specifies 0W-20 full synthetic with Honda's Genuine Motor Oil or equivalent meeting ILSAC GF-5 or GF-6 standards
  • Oil dilution issues on 1.5T engines: The 2017-2019 1.5L turbo had a known oil dilution problem in colder climates where petrol from short trips mixes into the oil, causing the level to read high and the viscosity to drop
  • Non-genuine oil filters: Using an aftermarket filter that doesn't meet Honda's bypass valve specs can cause pressure issues at cold start
  • Overfilling: The 1.5T holds 3.5L with a filter change; overfilling causes foaming and can damage seals
  • Extended drain intervals on turbos: The 1.5T runs hotter than the old 2.0L, so going beyond 10,000km on the same oil is risky, especially with short-trip driving

What to Do Right Now

  1. Confirm your engine: Check your compliance plate or service book. 2012-2016 CR-V uses the 2.0L K20 (0W-20 or 5W-20, 4.2L capacity). 2017+ uses the 1.5L L15B7 turbo (0W-20 full synthetic, 3.5L with filter).
  2. Check the oil level cold: Pull the dipstick before starting the engine. On the 1.5T, if the level reads above the upper mark, have it tested for petrol dilution before driving further.
  3. Use Honda-spec oil: Honda Genuine Synthetic 0W-20 is sold at Honda dealers and isn't expensive. If using aftermarket oil, confirm it meets API SN or SP and ILSAC GF-5/GF-6.
  4. Replace the oil filter with a genuine Honda part: Part number 15400-PLM-A02 fits most CR-V models. Don't skimp here.
  5. Log your service interval: Reset the Maintenance Minder after each change. The system calculates drain intervals based on driving conditions, not just kilometres.

When It's Serious

If your oil light illuminates while driving, pull over immediately. A flashing oil pressure warning on the CR-V means the pump isn't building adequate pressure, which can destroy rod bearings within minutes. Don't restart the engine until you've checked the level and confirmed there's no leak.

On the 1.5T, a consistently rising oil level between services is a red flag. If your dipstick reads above maximum and you smell petrol in the oil, the engine needs diagnosis before further use. Honda extended warranty coverage in some markets for this specific dilution issue, so check your VIN against any applicable campaigns at a Honda dealer.
