Toyota Camry Oil Specifications: Complete Guide
The Toyota Camry uses different oil specifications depending on the engine and model year, and using the wrong viscosity or API rating will accelerate wear and void your warranty. Getting this right is straightforward once you know which engine you have.
Oil Specifications by Engine
- 2.5L 4-cylinder (A25A-FKS, 2018+): Toyota recommends 0W-20 full synthetic, API SN or SP. This engine runs tight tolerances and needs the lower viscosity for proper cold-start lubrication.
- 3.5L V6 (2GR-FKS, 2018+): Also specifies 0W-20 full synthetic, API SN or SP. Do not substitute 5W-30 thinking it offers better protection -- it doesn't in this engine.
- 2.5L Hybrid (A25A-FXS, 2018+): Same 0W-20 spec, but the hybrid system means stop-start cycles are constant. Stick to genuine Toyota or a reputable full synthetic only.
- Older 2.4L (2AZ-FE, 2002-2011): These take 5W-30, API SL or SM. Some owners with high mileage (200,000km+) move to 10W-30 to address slight oil consumption, which is acceptable.
- 3.5L V6 (2GR-FE, 2006-2017): 5W-30 full synthetic, API SN. Toyota issued a technical service bulletin (TSB-0094-09) for oil consumption on early 2GR-FE engines -- if yours burns oil, check consumption over 5,000km intervals.
- Always check the oil cap or the owner's manual for the final word -- sticker on the cap trumps everything else.
Oil Change Intervals
- 2018+ engines with 0W-20: Toyota's recommended interval is 10,000km or 12 months, whichever comes first, using full synthetic. If you drive short trips mostly in the city, drop to 7,500km.
- Pre-2018 engines with 5W-30: Change every 5,000-7,500km. These older engines weren't designed around extended drain intervals.
- Check your oil level monthly -- pour it to the upper mark on the dipstick, not just the safe zone. Camrys, especially the 2GR-FE, can consume oil between services.
- Use the correct filter -- Toyota part 90915-YZZD4 (4-cyl) or 90915-YZZJ1 (V6) are the OEM options. Genuine or a quality aftermarket like Ryco will do fine.
- After changing oil, reset the maintenance light: hold the trip meter button while turning the ignition on (no engine start), and hold until the display resets.
When It's Serious
If your oil warning light comes on while driving, stop the engine immediately. Running a Camry with low oil pressure, even for a few minutes, can score the camshaft bearings in the A25A-FKS or wipe the variable valve timing actuators in the 2GR-FE. These are not cheap repairs.
Milky or frothy oil on the dipstick is a head gasket warning. On the 2AZ-FE (2002-2011), head gasket failures are a known failure mode, especially on cars that have run hot. If the oil looks like a chocolate milkshake, park it and get a compression test done before driving further.
