B1444: Door Handle Switch Circuit Short To Battery
What does B1444 mean?
B1444 is a body electronics code in the doors and windows system indicating that the door handle switch circuit is reading battery voltage when it should not be. Door handle switches signal the BCM when an exterior handle is pulled, triggering door unlocking or entry alert functions depending on the vehicle's access system configuration. When the BCM detects a constant or unexpected battery-level voltage on this circuit rather than the normal switch signal, it logs B1444 and may affect keyless entry or door locking behaviour.
A short to battery on this circuit most often results from wiring damage in the door harness, particularly at the door hinge area where repeated flexing can cause insulation to crack and allow a wire to contact a positive source. A failed door handle switch with an internal short can also cause this, as can a damaged or pinched connector in the door jamb wiring loom. Start by inspecting the door harness at the hinge area for visible damage, then check the handle switch connector for corrosion or pin damage before testing the switch itself.
This is a medium-severity code. Affected door locking or entry functions may not operate correctly, which is an inconvenience and a potential security consideration. The repair usually involves repairing or replacing the damaged section of door harness or the handle switch assembly, both of which are straightforward jobs for a competent auto electrician or a DIYer comfortable with door trim removal.
