B1688: Lamp Dome Input Circuit Short To Ground

MediumBodyLighting

What does B1688 mean?

B1688 is a body electronics code that sets when the body control module detects the dome lamp input circuit is shorted to ground. In plain terms, the signal wire carrying information about the dome light's state is reading a ground voltage when it shouldn't be, which tells the BCM something is wrong in that circuit. This is a lighting system fault, so it's unlikely to affect driveability, but it can cause the dome light to behave unexpectedly or not work at all.

The most common cause of a short-to-ground fault is a chafed or pinched wire somewhere in the dome lamp circuit. Door jambs, roof trim edges, and anywhere wiring runs through a body panel are the usual suspects. A failed dome lamp switch or a faulty input at the BCM connector can also produce this code. Start by inspecting the wiring harness and connectors in the dome light circuit for visible damage before pulling components.

Severity is rated medium, so while you won't be stranded, it's worth sorting out in a reasonable timeframe. A persistent short to ground can put unnecessary load on the BCM and in some cases affect other circuits sharing the same fuse or ground path. Clear the code after any repairs and confirm it doesn't return before calling it done.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Intermittent warning lights
  • Erratic gauge readings

Estimated repair cost

Typical range in Australia (parts + labour)

$100 – $500 AUD

Common causes

  • Damaged or corroded wiring harness
  • Loose or disconnected electrical connector
  • Failed lighting sensor or actuator
  • Blown fuse in the related circuit
  • Poor ground connection

What should you do?

Schedule a diagnostic appointment at your earliest convenience. The vehicle is generally safe to drive short distances, but the underlying issue should be addressed to prevent it from worsening.
