B1869: Lamp Air Bag Warning Indicator Circuit Open

CriticalBodyRestraint System

What does B1869 mean?

B1869 is a restraint system code that identifies an open circuit in the airbag warning indicator lamp circuit. This circuit is responsible for illuminating the SRS (supplemental restraint system) warning light on your dash. When the airbag control module cannot complete the circuit to operate that lamp, it logs B1869. The concern here goes beyond a simple globe replacement: a fault in the airbag warning circuit means you may not receive a visual alert if there is a genuine problem with your airbag system.

The open circuit is most commonly caused by a blown warning lamp globe, a broken wire in the indicator lamp circuit, a corroded connector at the airbag module or instrument cluster, or a fault within the airbag control module itself. Because this is classified as a critical severity code, diagnosis should not be delayed. Start with the lamp itself, then trace the circuit wiring back through the connectors to the SRS module.

Any fault touching the airbag and restraint system should be treated seriously. Do not attempt to clear this code and drive on without investigation, as you could lose the only visual warning your vehicle provides if the airbag system encounters a real fault. Have a qualified technician inspect and repair the circuit, and avoid disconnecting airbag-related connectors without following the correct safety procedures to prevent accidental deployment.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Check engine light (MIL) illuminated on dashboard
  • Intermittent warning lights
  • Erratic gauge readings

Estimated repair cost

Typical range in Australia (parts + labour)

$80 – $400 AUD

Common causes

  • Damaged or corroded wiring harness
  • Loose or disconnected electrical connector
  • Failed restraint system sensor or actuator
  • Blown fuse in the related circuit
  • Poor ground connection

What should you do?

This is a critical issue. Stop driving as soon as it is safe to do so and have the vehicle inspected immediately. Continuing to drive could cause further damage or pose a safety risk.
