P0642: Sensor Reference Voltage A Circuit Low

MediumPowertrainElectrical/Charging

What does P0642 mean?

P0642 is a powertrain code stored when the engine control module detects that the 5-volt reference voltage supplied to sensor circuit A has dropped below the expected threshold. This reference voltage is supplied by the ECU itself and powers a number of sensors across the engine management system. When it reads low, the ECU cannot trust the data coming back from any sensor sharing that reference circuit.

The most common causes are a short to ground somewhere on the reference voltage wire, a faulty sensor that is pulling the voltage down, or an internal fault in the ECU's reference voltage output. Because multiple sensors can share the same reference circuit, a damaged or internally shorted sensor is often the culprit. Start by unplugging sensors one at a time to see if the voltage recovers, which can help isolate the offending component without guesswork.

P0642 is medium severity and can cause rough running, incorrect fuel trims, or erratic sensor readings while active. Clear the code after any repairs and check whether it returns. If the fault persists after inspecting all sensors and wiring on that circuit, the ECU may need further testing by a qualified auto electrician.
