P1360: Ignition Coil A Secondary Circuit Malfunction
What does P1360 mean?
P1360 is a powertrain code that indicates a malfunction in the secondary circuit of ignition coil A. The secondary circuit is the high-voltage side of the coil, the side that delivers the spark to the plug. When the ECM detects that the coil A secondary circuit is not performing within expected parameters, it logs this fault. You may notice a misfire on the affected cylinder, rough idle, reduced power, or increased fuel consumption as a result.
The most common causes are a failed ignition coil, a fouled or damaged spark plug on the coil A cylinder, or a fault in the wiring and connectors feeding that coil. Start with the basics: inspect the coil connector for corrosion or damage, then pull the spark plug on the affected cylinder to check its condition. Swapping the coil to a different cylinder and seeing if the fault follows is a quick way to confirm whether the coil itself is the problem before buying parts.
Severity is rated high, and rightly so. A cylinder that isn't firing correctly is pumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust, which can damage the catalytic converter if left running for any length of time. Don't drive the car any more than necessary with this code active. Get the ignition coil and plug inspected and replaced as needed, then clear the code and verify the misfire is gone before driving normally.
Symptoms you may notice
- Check engine light (MIL) illuminated on dashboard
- Intermittent warning lights
- Erratic gauge readings
Estimated repair cost
Typical range in Australia (parts + labour)
Common causes
- Faulty ignition system component
- Wiring or connector issue in the related circuit
- Failed sensor providing incorrect readings
- Software/calibration issue requiring ECU update
- Related component causing secondary fault
What should you do?
This is a significant issue that should be diagnosed and repaired soon. Avoid long trips or heavy driving until the problem is resolved. Continued driving may cause additional damage.
