P1485: EGRV Circuit Malfunction
What does P1485 mean?
P1485 is a powertrain code that identifies a malfunction in the EGRV (exhaust gas recirculation valve) circuit, which is part of the EGR system. The EGR system recirculates a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the intake to reduce combustion temperatures and lower NOx emissions. The EGRV circuit is responsible for controlling the EGR valve's operation. When the PCM detects that the circuit is not responding correctly, it sets P1485 and may disable EGR operation to protect the engine.
A malfunctioning EGRV circuit can be caused by a failed EGR valve solenoid or actuator, a broken or shorted wire in the control circuit, a corroded connector, or an internal PCM driver fault. Carbon buildup around the EGR valve is common in higher-mileage engines and can cause the valve to stick, which may contribute to circuit reading anomalies. Start by inspecting the wiring and connector at the EGR valve assembly, then test the solenoid or actuator for correct resistance and operation.
P1485 carries a high severity rating. With EGR operation compromised, the engine may run hotter in the combustion chamber, fuel economy can suffer, and the vehicle will likely fail an emissions test. Continued operation without addressing the fault may accelerate wear on related engine components. Have this diagnosed and repaired promptly rather than clearing the code and driving on.
Symptoms you may notice
- Check engine light (MIL) illuminated on dashboard
- Intermittent warning lights
- Erratic gauge readings
Estimated repair cost
Typical range in Australia (parts + labour)
Common causes
- Faulty egr system component
- Wiring or connector issue in the related circuit
- Failed sensor providing incorrect readings
- Software/calibration issue requiring ECU update
- Related component causing secondary fault
What should you do?
This is a significant issue that should be diagnosed and repaired soon. Avoid long trips or heavy driving until the problem is resolved. Continued driving may cause additional damage.
