P1636: Inductive Signature Chip Communication Error
What does P1636 mean?
P1636 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code that points to a communication failure between the control module and the inductive signature chip. This chip is typically associated with ignition key recognition or immobiliser systems, where it validates the key's inductive signal before allowing the engine to start. A communication error here means the module attempted to read or exchange data with the chip and received an unexpected or no response.
The most common causes are a fault in the wiring or antenna ring around the ignition barrel, a damaged or poorly programmed key transponder, or an internal fault in the module handling the signature verification. Moisture in the ignition area can also disrupt the inductive coupling that allows the chip to communicate. Start by testing with a known-good key if one is available, then inspect the wiring and antenna coil around the ignition for any physical damage.
P1636 is rated low severity, but it can have practical consequences depending on the vehicle, including start inhibit in some operating modes. If the engine is starting normally and no other symptoms are present, the fault may have been intermittent. Monitor for recurrence and have the key and ignition antenna checked if the code returns or if starting becomes unreliable.
Symptoms you may notice
- Check engine light (MIL) illuminated on dashboard
- Possible issues with engine/powertrain operation
- Vehicle may enter reduced power mode (limp mode)

Typical range in Australia (parts + labour)
Common causes
- Faulty engine/powertrain component
- Wiring or connector issue in the related circuit
- Failed sensor providing incorrect readings
- Software/calibration issue requiring ECU update
- Related component causing secondary fault
