P1708: Clutch Switch Circuit Malfunction
What does P1708 mean?
P1708 is a powertrain code that flags a malfunction in the clutch switch circuit, which lives within the transmission system. The clutch switch tells the vehicle's control module when the clutch pedal is depressed, a signal that is used for starting inhibit, shift logic, and cruise control cancellation among other functions. When the module detects that the switch circuit is not behaving as expected, it logs P1708 and may restrict certain vehicle functions as a result.
The fault is commonly caused by a failed clutch switch at the pedal, a broken or shorted wire in the switch circuit, a damaged connector, or a misadjusted switch that is not triggering at the correct pedal position. Since this is classified as a malfunction rather than a specific open or short, the circuit could be sticking, intermittently dropping out, or returning an implausible signal. Checking the switch adjustment and connector condition at the clutch pedal is the first step, followed by testing the switch itself.
P1708 is rated high severity because a faulty clutch switch can interfere with starting the vehicle and may cause issues with transmission control logic. On some vehicles it will also prevent cruise control from operating. This is not a code to drive around on indefinitely. Have the clutch switch circuit diagnosed and repaired to restore normal transmission and starting system behaviour.
Symptoms you may notice
- Check engine light (MIL) illuminated on dashboard
- Intermittent warning lights
- Erratic gauge readings
Estimated repair cost
Typical range in Australia (parts + labour)
Common causes
- Faulty transmission component
- Wiring or connector issue in the related circuit
- Failed sensor providing incorrect readings
- Software/calibration issue requiring ECU update
- Related component causing secondary fault
What should you do?
This is a significant issue that should be diagnosed and repaired soon. Avoid long trips or heavy driving until the problem is resolved. Continued driving may cause additional damage.
