U0130: Lost Communication With Steering Effort Control Module

LowNetwork/CommunicationCommunication Bus

What does U0130 mean?

U0130 is a network communication fault that logs when a module on the vehicle's communication bus stops receiving messages from the steering effort control module. The steering effort control module manages variable or speed-sensitive steering assist, adjusting how heavy or light the steering feels based on driving conditions. When communication to this module drops out, the receiving module raises U0130 and the steering system may fall back to a fixed or default assist level.

Like most U-series codes, this fault usually points to a wiring or connectivity issue rather than an outright module failure. A damaged bus wire, corroded connector at the steering effort module, poor earth, or a loss of power supply to the module are the first things to check. Low battery voltage can also cause intermittent bus communication faults, so verify the battery and charging system are in good shape before going deeper into the network wiring.

Severity is rated low, and the car will generally remain driveable, though steering feel may be different from normal if the module is genuinely offline. Because steering is a safety-relevant system, it's worth scanning the module directly to see if it responds on the bus and inspecting the associated wiring and connectors as soon as practical. Don't dismiss it as a one-off without confirming it doesn't come back.
