U0164: Lost Communication With HVAC Control Module
What does U0164 mean?
U0164 is a network communication fault stored when the vehicle's primary control network loses contact with the HVAC control module, which manages your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. Like other U-series codes, it does not necessarily mean the climate control hardware has failed, only that the module responsible for it has stopped communicating on the bus. The result is typically that the climate system falls back to a fixed or default state.
Wiring faults are the most likely cause, including damaged connectors, corroded pins, or a broken wire in the CAN bus circuit serving the HVAC module. A blown fuse supplying the module is worth checking first as it is the easiest thing to rule out. If power and grounds check out, the module itself may have developed an internal fault and stopped broadcasting on the network.
U0164 carries a low severity rating, so it is not an urgent safety concern. However, if your climate control has stopped responding or is stuck in one mode, this code is likely the reason. Get it diagnosed at a convenient time. A technician will need to confirm whether the issue is in the wiring, a connector, or the module itself before any parts are replaced.
Symptoms you may notice
- Check engine light (MIL) illuminated on dashboard
- Possible issues with communication bus operation
- Vehicle may enter reduced power mode (limp mode)
