Toyota Prado Oil Specifications: Complete Guide

The Toyota Prado's oil requirements depend on which engine you have under the bonnet. The 150 Series runs either the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 petrol or the 1KD-FTV 3.0L diesel, and getting the right spec wrong on either is an expensive mistake. Both engines are robust but have specific needs that Toyota Australia's recommendations account for.

What Affects Oil Choice in Your Prado

  • 1GR-FE petrol (4.0L V6): Requires 5W-30 full synthetic to API SN or ILSAC GF-5 standard, with a sump capacity of 7.4 litres including filter. Older 120 Series petrol variants also suit 5W-30
  • 1KD-FTV diesel (3.0L): Needs 5W-30 diesel-rated oil to API CF or ACEA C3 spec, 7.0 litres with filter. Low-SAPS oil is preferable if your Prado has a DPF (post-2012 150 Series)
  • Turbo heat cycles: The 1KD-FTV turbo runs hot. Extended drain intervals bake oil, causing sludge in the turbo oil feed line, which is an expensive fix
  • Cold starts in regional or alpine areas: Both engines benefit from 0W-30 in genuinely cold climates, where 5W-30 can struggle to circulate fast enough at startup
  • Aftermarket modifications: Lifted Prados running larger tyres put added load on drivetrain components, which can increase oil operating temperature and shorten effective service life
  • Oil filter quality: Cheap filters on the 1KD-FTV are known to bypass under pressure, meaning dirty oil still circulates through the engine

What to Do Right Now

  1. Confirm your engine code on the underbonnet sticker or your registration papers before buying oil. The 1GR-FE and 1KD-FTV take different spec oil and you cannot substitute one for the other
  2. Check your current oil level with the engine cold, on level ground. The dipstick on both engines has a MIN/MAX range of about one litre, so do not overfill
  3. If you are overdue for a change (Prado diesel: 10,000km or 6 months; petrol: up to 15,000km on full synthetic with normal driving), book it now rather than running it to the next convenient date
  4. Use a genuine Toyota or reputable OEM filter. Part number 90915-YZZD3 fits most 150 Series variants but confirm with your parts supplier
  5. After every oil change, reset the service reminder via the trip meter button so you do not lose track of your next interval

When It's Serious

If your Prado's oil pressure warning light comes on while driving, pull over immediately and shut the engine off. Running a 1KD-FTV or 1GR-FE with low or no oil pressure for even a few minutes causes irreversible bearing damage, and you are looking at a rebuild or replacement engine if you push on. Do not assume it is a faulty sensor without checking the actual oil level first.

Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust on startup, combined with rapidly dropping oil level between services, points to worn piston rings or valve stem seals. On higher-kilometre 1KD-FTV engines (above 250,000km), this is a known wear pattern. It will not fix itself, and continuing to run the engine low on oil accelerates the damage significantly.
